What is the Agafay desert?
Agafay is a stone desert on the edge of Marrakech, the kind geographers call a reg. Instead of sand dunes you get a wide plateau of bare, rolling hills in gold, beige and pink, with the High Atlas mountains on the horizon. In winter their peaks are white with snow.
There are no towns out here, only a few Berber villages, olive groves on the edges and a growing number of desert camps. Most visitors come for an afternoon and evening: a quad or camel ride, the sunset, then dinner under the stars.

Where is it, and how far from Marrakech?
The Agafay desert starts about 30 to 40 km southwest of Marrakech, between the city and the foothills of the Atlas mountains. The road heads out toward Amizmiz and the lake of Lalla Takerkoust, which sits on the edge of the desert.
By car it takes around 45 minutes from the center of Marrakech. The last stretch to most camps is a dirt track.
Agafay or the Sahara?
The Sahara's big sand dunes, like Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, are about 550 km from Marrakech. That's a drive of around 9 hours over the Atlas, so most people see them on a 3 day tour.
Agafay is the opposite trade: no dunes, but it's close. You still get the open space, the silence, the camels and a huge sunset, and you're back in your riad the same night.
- Pick Agafay if you have one free afternoon or evening, you travel with kids, or you want quads and buggies.
- Pick the Sahara if you have 3 days or more and you want to sleep among sand dunes.
Best time to visit, and the weather
Agafay is sunny almost all year. The big difference is the heat by day and the cold after dark.
| Season | Days | Evenings | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring March to May | Warm, around 23 to 29°C | Cool | Clear views, perfect for quads |
| Summer June to August | Hot, around 34 to 38°C, sometimes over 40°C | Warm | Go late in the day. The evening is the best part |
| Autumn September to November | Around 23 to 32°C | Mild | Long golden sunsets |
| Winter December to February | Mild and sunny, around 19 to 21°C | Cold, can drop to about 5°C | Snow on the Atlas peaks. Bring a warm jacket |
Day temperatures are the average highs for Marrakech from the NOAA climate normals for 1991 to 2020, and they change from year to year. The sun sets much later in summer than in winter, so evening tours start later in summer and earlier in winter.
Things to do in Agafay
Quad biking and buggies
The most popular way to see the hills. Guided rides follow dirt tracks with stops for photos. No experience needed: your guide sets the pace. See our quad biking evening.
Camel rides at sunset
Slow, calm and good for all ages. Rides are timed for golden hour, when the hills turn orange. See our sunset camel ride.
Dinner and a fire show
Camps serve Moroccan dinners of salads, tagine and couscous, often with Gnawa music and fire dancers after dark.
Stargazing
Far from the city lights, the sky fills with stars on clear nights.
Overnight camps and pool days
Some camps offer tents for the night or a pool by day. We focus on the evening, and you're back in Marrakech by around 22:00.
